Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills. Many researches are supportive of the fact that toxic metals increase the symptoms of autism, PDD and ADHD. Current research ascertains the presence of increased levels of toxic metals such as lead, mercury, thallium, tin and tungsten in the blood and urine of autistic children as compared to other children. These toxic metals can impair brain development and function, and also interfere with the normal functioning of other body organs and systems. Quite a few herbs have been used to treat neurological disorders through the ages. Several herbs appear to have antioxidant, antiseptic, antiviral, antifungal, or antibiotic properties. They include- Brahmi, Gotu kola leaf, Calamus root, Aloe vera, Ashwagandha, Black cohosh, Chamomile, Damiana, Gingko, Sarsaparilla and many more. The purpose of this study was to review the available literature of heavy metal toxicity and herbal remedies for autistic spectrum and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
