The rise in diabetes runs roughly parallel that of overweight and obesity, with risk doubling in those who are overweight and tripling in those who are obese. Some people believe that type 2 diabetes is more a matter of bad genes than bad habits. While it is true that some populations have a greater susceptibility to the disease, genes serve primarily as a loaded gun; it is almost always diet and lifestyle that pull the trigger.
