Crisis as Transformational Opportunity Part 2: The Butterfly Emerges, by Dr. Dorle Kneifel, CHA President
I have occasionally pondered what the caterpillar is ‘thinking’ as it responds to an inner or outer signal to change course. It stops eating. It stops crawling and it builds something it has never built before. Then, once inside the chrysalis, it seals the chamber. Alone and in darkness, it undergoes transformation. Its body is dissolved into component parts which are used to create the butterfly.
Does the dissolving caterpillar experience fear? What happens if the caterpillar resists this dissolution? Does it disrupt and abort the process? If the caterpillar ‘let’s go’ and is dissolved successfully and reconfigured as a butterfly, is the butterfly a flying ‘former caterpillar’ or is it simply a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis?
What I am (fairly) certain of is that the caterpillar has no inkling of its destiny. The existence of this transformational reality exemplifies the intelligence, the beauty, and the mystery of Life
When we are faced with overwhelming, confusing, incomprehensible, seemingly unjust life circumstances, we have the opportunity to respond in ways that trust the Essence of who we are as well as trust Life itself. When we make decisions that reflect the best version of ourselves that we can imagine, these choices confirm and build who we are, moment by moment. Do we choose hate or do we choose curiosity? Do we choose bitterness and embody a state of victimization or do we let go and face the next moment with our hearts? Having courage simply requires showing up with an open heart. Do we trust the Benevolence, the Magnificence, the Humour, the Grace of Life/God/Source? Or not.
I remind myself when I am feeling overwhelmed or betrayed or abandoned, that the Life that has lived me for the past 66 years and brought me successfully (I am alive!) to this moment here and now, will not suddenly stop supporting me. Just because I do not recognize my newness nor see the still-moist folded wings emerging from my back, does not mean that I am not in fact an emerging Butterfly.
In the dissolution of my life after 2020, I ‘lost’ a lot and gave up a lot. However, I did not lose myself. and Life did not abandon me. New experiences, new friends, new challenges, and new opportunities presented themselves. This included being asked in 2024 to organize a Conference for the CHA. I said ‘sure’ even though I had no idea how to do that. I was offered the position of CHA President in 2025 and reluctantly said ‘sure’ even though I did not feel like President material.
The external changes in my life which, according to quantum physics, mirror my internal transformation, have been nothing less than amazing. I have experienced true collaboration and co-creation with my Event Team. Together we did what none of us could have done individually. We envisioned and created the April 2026 SelfCare is Healthcare Retreat Conference which was a stunning success and nourished our collective souls. Inspired by what we experienced and what we heard from many of the attendees, we are leaning in and creating another Retreat Conference next Spring!
The opportunity to manifest the dream of SelfCare is Healthcare, came out of the dissolution of my professional life that had worked well for me. The dream emerged and took flight out of the apparent ‘ruins’.
As each of us looks around at the chaos and darkness we are being inundated with, we can choose to hold our dreams and bring them into form. Dreams that honour Life. Dreams that include Health and Wellness, Abundance and Peace for all. Dreams that we can co-create together.
It begins here now with each one of us responding to our realities. How will we respond? What will we create with our choices?
